Unseen. Stories of Warsaw Servants

Museum of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland, 2022

In the early twentieth century, Warsaw employed some 40,000 young women in domestic service each year. Cleaning, cooking and washing brought them into intimate contact with the lives of successive generations of the city's inhabitants. Yet their own histories remained largely out of sight, both within the household and in accounts of the city's past.

Across six rooms, more than four hundred historical objects and contemporary works of art described domestic labour and the women who undertook it. The exhibition followed a servant's passage from arrival in Warsaw and the search for employment to the routines and conditions of daily work.
