Composing the Space. Sculptures in the Avant-garde

MS2 Museum of Art in Łódź, Łódź, Poland, 2020

Taking Katarzyna Kobro's work as its point of departure, the exhibition examined avant-garde investigations into the relationship between space, movement and the body. Her sculptures were placed alongside works by contemporaries including Naum Gabo, Alexander Calder, Barbara Hepworth, Antoine Pevsner, Jean Arp, Alexander Archipenko and Julio González.

The exhibition asked how experiments with form, time and bodily rhythm registered the experience of modernity. It considered the relationships artists proposed between abstract form and movement, and between people and their surroundings.

Moving beyond sculpture understood as a self-contained solid, the arrangement also addressed the movement of the viewer. Performative tours invited visitors to reconsider how the body and the senses participate in an encounter with individual works and with the exhibition as a whole.
