Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Poland, Undated
A raised platform forms the centrepiece of this exhibition proposal, expressing the displacement, rootlessness and instability experienced by Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. Without a prescribed route, it allows visitors to choose their own passage through the material, echoing the uncertainties of the post-war years.
Beneath the platform, the exhibition floor is conceived as a dark lake: a spatial metaphor for the pervasive antisemitism surrounding survivors' lives. A three-dimensional map records pogroms and outbreaks of antisemitic violence, with variations in relief conveying their intensity.
Objects are distributed across surfaces at the platform's edges, within showcases, on freestanding displays and along the walls. Clear sightlines at eye level preserve an openness intended to evoke the profound sense of absence following the war. Disposable outer garments would draw visitors into the setting, their movement adding a temporary human presence to the scenography.
