Formally speaking. Sculpted images of Fryderyk Chopin

Fryderyk Chopin Museum, Poland, 2025

Real and apparent movement provide the organising principle of this exhibition of sculpted images of Fryderyk Chopin. Metallic balloons bearing the composer's likeness respond to currents of air and changes in temperature, while portrait busts turn slowly on mechanically rotating plinths. The display is conceived as a kinetic space in which neither the objects nor their relationships are entirely fixed.

The design addresses perception and its psychological processes rather than seeking an explicitly emotional response. It brings together an interest in optical illusion and an enquiry into movement, whether naturally occurring or mechanically produced. Light, motion and changing viewpoints make the act of looking part of the exhibition itself.

Through these devices, the project explores the mechanisms of vision and the ways in which dynamics and optical phenomena might be given spatial form. A closed composition gives way to shifting relationships between objects, images and the viewer.
