Moved Bodies. Choreographies of modernity

MS1 Museum of Art in Łódź, Łódź, Poland, 2017

Beginning with Katarzyna Kobro's sculptural theory and practice, the exhibition explored modernity as an experience of the body in motion. The early twentieth century brought a fundamental rethinking of bodily expression. Pioneers such as Loïe Fuller and Isadora Duncan challenged the formal constraints of classical ballet, while the study of anatomy and movement opened further ground for experimentation.

Archival films and photographs introduced these experiments in dance and choreography. The display, however, was not conceived as a historical record alone. Scenography developed from the archival material provided a setting for new performative work, allowing the exhibition to be activated by bodies as well as understood through documents.

Performative contributions by Tomasz Bazan, Marysia Zimpel, the Noa Eshkol Chamber Dance Group and Noa Shadur extended this relationship between historical enquiry and contemporary movement.
